Facebook and Instagram Ads for Beginners: How to Plan Your First Campaign

Facebook and Instagram ads are run through Meta’s advertising platform, and they can reach people based on location, interests and behaviour. They are useful for generating leads and online sales, but a poorly planned campaign can waste money quickly. Here is how to plan your first campaign.

1. Start with one clear goal

Decide what you want the ad to achieve. The main options are:

  • Leads: people fill in a form or message you.
  • Sales: people buy from your online store.
  • Traffic: people visit your website.
  • Awareness: people learn your brand exists.

Pick one goal per campaign. Meta optimises delivery for the goal you choose.

2. Set up tracking before you spend

Install the Meta Pixel on your website and set up the events that matter, such as a form submission or a purchase. Without tracking you cannot tell which ads produce results.

3. Choose your audience

Start with a specific group: a location, an age range and interests that relate to your product. As data builds up, you can try custom audiences (for example, people who visited your site) and lookalike audiences (people similar to your customers). Avoid making the audience so narrow that the ads barely run, or so broad that they reach people who will never buy.

4. Create ads people notice

  • Use a clear image or short video that shows your product or service.
  • Write a simple headline that states the benefit.
  • Keep the text short and end with one call to action, such as “Send message” or “Shop now”.
  • Design for mobile first, because most people see ads on their phones.

5. Send people to a page that matches the ad

If your ad promotes one product or offer, send people to a page about that product or offer, not to a general homepage. Make sure the page loads quickly and makes the next step obvious.

6. Start with a modest budget and test

Begin with a budget you are comfortable spending and run two or three variations of your ad to see which works better. Give each test enough time to collect data before you change it. Then move more budget to the ads that produce results.

7. Measure what matters

Look beyond likes and reach. Track the cost per lead or cost per sale, the click-through rate and how many of your leads become customers. Compare these numbers to what a customer is worth to your business.

Common mistakes

  • Boosting posts instead of building a proper campaign.
  • Running ads with no tracking.
  • Sending all traffic to the homepage.
  • Changing everything too quickly, so you cannot tell what worked.
  • Expecting instant results from a very small test budget.
