Small Business Website Checklist: 10 Things Every Site Needs

A small business website does not need dozens of pages. It needs the right pages, clear messages and an easy way for a visitor to contact you. Use this checklist to see whether your website covers the essentials, or to plan a new one.

1. A homepage that says what you do in five seconds

Visitors decide quickly whether they are in the right place. Your homepage headline should state what you offer, who it is for and where you work. Add one clear call to action, such as “Get a free quote”.

2. A page for each main service

Do not put every service on one page. A separate page for each service explains it properly and gives you a page that can appear in Google when people search for that service. Include what is included, how you work, who it is for and answers to common questions.

3. An About page that builds trust

People buy from businesses they trust. Say who you are, where you are based, how long you have been working and what you care about. Add photos of your team if you can.

4. Proof: work, reviews and results

Show examples of your work, customer reviews and, where you can, real results. Only publish reviews and numbers that are genuine and that you can back up.

5. Easy contact options

Make it simple to get in touch: a contact form, a phone number, a WhatsApp button and an email address. Add your address and opening hours if customers visit you. Test the form regularly to be sure the messages reach you.

6. Mobile-friendly design

Most visitors use a phone. Check that text is readable, buttons are easy to tap and nothing is cut off. Test your own website on your phone.

7. Speed

Slow pages lose visitors. Compress images, avoid unnecessary plugins and use good hosting. See our guide to why websites are slow.

8. Basic SEO

  • A unique title and description for every page.
  • One clear main heading per page.
  • Descriptive image names and alt text.
  • An XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console.
  • Your business name, address and phone number consistent across the site and your Google Business Profile.

9. Legal and trust pages

Publish a privacy policy, especially if you collect information through forms or use analytics. Use HTTPS so browsers show your site as secure.

10. Tracking

Connect Google Analytics and Search Console so you can see how many people visit, where they come from and which pages bring enquiries.
